FABULOUS flans • The domestication of the chicken for the purposes of egg laying is attributed to the Romans. With a steady supply of eggs on hand, the Romans came up with a variety of ways to use them and one of those was the flan. A flan is often thought of as being sweet, but in fact the conventional definition of a flan is any pastry casing with a sweet or savoury filling. These days you don't even need the casing, or the eggs, for a dish to be called a flan. Your options for a flan are as open as its casing (we even give you some vegan choices), so experiment with our: coffee flan: pumpkin spice flan: cheese flan: orange cake flan: or vegan coconut and berry flan with hemp almond crust.
