special forces MARCH 13 • As many as 20,000 dogs served on both sides during World War I, some carrying ammunition and rations through the trenches and others offering comfort to soldiers. Then, on this day in 1942, the U.S. Army established the War Dog Program, actively recruiting and training canines to aid the military, with which dogs still serve. Celebrate K9 Corps heroes past and present on National K9 Veterans Day.

DIY with Love • When she designs a space, Rachel Martino wants it to be colorful, bold, and whimsical, yet also functional.
time to hibernate • Do shorter days and less sunlight, not to mention frigid temperatures in many parts of the country, leave you craving a long winter’s nap? We turned to the bears for a lesson in how to hunker down happily and beat those wintertime blues.
You better bee-lieve it: HONEY IS A SUPERFOOD! • Winnie-the-Pooh isn’t the only bear who loves honey. Real-deal grizzlies gobble up the rich source of carbohydrates for a quick energy boost, unfazed by bee stings thanks to their thick fur. Especially in cold and flu season, Manuka honey (so called because it’s made from the Manuka bush in New Zealand and thought to be especially full of healing compounds) should be your go-to, as it can ease winter viruses and infections. Try it blended into smoothies, mixed into herbal tea, or drizzled on yogurt. (Keep in mind, though, that honey is sugar by another name and even sweeter—so maybe don’t stick your entire paw in the jar!)
MY PERFECT DAY with woman’s day • In our heartwarming new TV series, WD Editor in Chief Meaghan B Murphy is the fairy godmother–like host, traveling across the country to astonish deserving folks (nominated by their loved ones) with bucket-list experiences, life-changing gifts, and big emotions.
