Grades 6-10 The slim offerings in the Teen Witches' Guides series (2 titles) look at fun topics that often intrigue teens and tweens: astrology and crystals. There's no in-depth background regarding witchcraft as a practice or religion, nor are there any bibliographies or suggestions for further reading, but the "teen witch" framework offers an easy hook for readers interested in alternative belief systems. The books feature easygoing commentary laid out in brief paragraphs that are set-off by graphics, fact boxes, charts, and illustrations in a how-to-manual style that allows readers to skip around. Although both titles share an illustrator and some of the same authors, their approaches differ. Astrology is a pretty straightforward march through the zodiac. Eight-page chapters consider basic traits and behavior patterns, relationship tips, work habits and suggested occupations, and physical activities, all geared to a young audience. Upbeat, cheerful, and informative, these lightweight offerings will appeal to reluctant readers and aspiring witches alike.
