Lizzy "Overachiever" Chung, Esq. doesn't know the meaning of "can't." That is, she doesn't until she passes out from a panic attack during her first trial. Her law firm gives her paid time-off to "relax," but she has no clue how. Jack Park, her childhood friend, wants her to rediscover the iridescent joy she had pre-law school and college and convinces her to stay with him in Weldon. He's been planning to move away from his parents' loving but overprotective gaze and, more specifically, away from Weldon and his family's brewery, but that can wait a few more weeks until his friend finds her footing again. But when an unexpected attraction flares between them while Lizzy tries to resuscitate a failing bookstore on Weldon, the two must choose between past dreams or their forever together. Sometimes the path to the rest of your life has been in front of you all along.

Best friends realize their feelings for each other in this dry romance from Lee (The Dating Dare). Los Angeles attorney Elizabeth Chung heads on a three-week vacation to the sleepy town of Weldon to decompress with her childhood friend, Weldon local Jack Park, after a trial leaves her feeling drained. She rents a room attached to a small bookstore, excited to escape into romance novels and reconnect with Jack. But unbeknownst to Lizzy, Jack has loved her since they were kids, and their sudden proximity makes it harder than ever to hide his true feelings. This doesn’t matter for long, as soon Lizzy realizes that her own feelings have also deepened into something more. But with their friendship on the line and the long distance between their two homes, they must decide if it’s worth risking what they already have for a chance to build something even better. While Lee admirably immerses her audience in Korean American culture, the cookie-cutter characters and lack of any real conflict results in a predictable romance that falls flat. This one misses the mark. Agent: Sarah Younger, Nancy Yost Literary.

Cindy Kay charms listeners with her narration of this story of unrequited love between two childhood friends. Lizzy has always been an overachiever, but she strikes out in L.A. when her legal career takes a dive. She returns to her small hometown to lick her wounds and runs into her childhood friend, Jack, who has secretly carried a torch for her as long as he can remember. While the plot is familiar, Kay adds a personal touch that makes the romance seem new. She delivers honest character monologues and embraces the awkward yet intriguing relationship between Jack and Lizzy. Pairing Kay's calm narrative and emotional dialogue, this performance will please those who love a good romance. G.M. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine
