Ex-teammates—and exes—reunite for a second chance in this delightful sports romance from debut author KD Casey.
Zach Glasser has put up with a lot for the sport he loves. Endless days on the road, playing half-decent baseball in front of half-full stadiums and endless nights alone, pretending this is the life he's always wanted.
The thing is, it could have been everything he ever wanted—if only he'd had the guts to tell his family, tell the club, that he was in love with his teammate Eugenio Morales. Well, ex-teammate now. When Zach wouldn't—couldn't—come out, Eugenio made the devastating choice to move on, demanding a trade away from Oakland. Away from Zach.
Three years and countless regrets later, Zach still can't get Eugenio out of his head. Or his heart. And when they both get selected to play in the league's All-Star Classic, those feelings and that chemistry come roaring back.
Zach wants a second chance. Eugenio wants a relationship he doesn't have to hide. Maybe it's finally time they both get what they want.

Casey makes an auspicious debut with this sensitive coming-out story set in the world of baseball. The All-Star Classic game throws Zach Glasser, the Jewish, hard of hearing catcher for the Oakland Elephants, back into contact with Venezuelan catcher Eugenio Morales, whom Zach met three years ago during spring training when Eugenio was a rookie vying for Zach’s spot. Despite their rivalry, the men bonded when Zach helped Eugenio work on his skills, teaching him how to make a ball look like a strike. Soon, they were sharing meals—Eugenio is a fabulous cook and a foodie—and eventually acted on their mutual attraction. But Zach’s reluctance to come out led Eugenio to end their relationship. The narrative toggles between the present-day friction and the slow burn of three years ago, an approach that makes the guys’ sleepovers bittersweet but interrupts the momentum of the romance, asking readers to recalibrate ever chapter. Still, Casey ably builds the tension of the pair playing against each other and thoughtfully handles Zach’s struggle to come out. There is arguably as much baseball as sex here, which may overwhelm readers uninterested in the sport but will delight devotees of America’s pastime and passionate gay romance. Casey is a writer to watch. Agent: Deidre Knight, the Knight Agency. -

Catcher Zach Glasser shows up as his mediocre baseball team's lone player to the major league All-Star game without much anxiety. He doesn't expect much playing time, and his parents couldn't take time off work to make the game. Zach has become accustomed to going through the motions of life, even while playing the game he loves. When he comes face to face with the one person he didn't anticipate--former teammate and lover Eugenio Morales--feelings of regret and longing become impossible to ignore. As the story alternates between the present day and flashbacks to their first meeting, the start of their love affair, and the painful breakup, Zach must decide what he's willing to risk for a chance at happiness. VERDICT Casey's (Dirty Slide) sympathetic, multilayered characters are framed within a baseball story line that informs but never bores. The steamy love scenes don't disappoint and fans of sports romances will look forward to the author's next book.--Nicole J. Suarez, Frankfort P.L. Dist., IL
