Fortune (Meet Me at the Lake) transports readers to beautiful Prince Edward Island in this emotional love story. Toronto florist Lucy Ashby didn’t realize that her vacation affair with island native Felix Clark was forbidden. Then they discovered that he’s the brother of her best friend, Bridget, who would not approve. After agreeing to keep their relationship on the down low, Lucy is mostly content to see Felix periodically over the next five years, hooking up with no strings attached when she and Bridget visit from Toronto every summer. However, stronger feelings begin to percolate when Felix and Lucy reunite to figure out why Bridget ran away to the island two weeks before her wedding. Fortune builds engrossing tension between Lucy and Felix, who is fully immersed in his local community as a holiday home renovator, by flashing back to their previous rendezvous on wind-swept beaches. The leads have undeniable magnetism, and Fortune avoids the pitfalls of a typical Hallmark ending, instead delivering a truly satisfying happily ever after. Romance fans will devour this. Prince Edward Island comes to life in Fortune's (Meet Me at the Lake) sweet and steamy latest. Lucy Ashby, an overworked and anxious florist, rushes to PEI at the call of her beloved best friend, Bridget, who's being very secretive about a crisis that has put her wedding in jeopardy. But Bridget isn't the only one keeping secrets: Lucy slept with Bridget's devilishly handsome younger brother, Felix, five summers ago. And four summers ago. And three, but maybe this summer will be different? Though the pacing occasionally lags, Fortune's evocative writing captures the sights and sounds of summer by the beach. Lucy's outsized fear over Bridget's reaction to Lucy and Felix's relationship consumes most of the novel, and picturesque descriptions of the island take up the rest. A.J. Bridel pours emotion into the narration, and each character feels unique in tone and manner. Her take on Lucy, in particular, leaves each sentence delivered like a secret or a confession. VERDICT A fun romantic romp with a lovable cast of characters as warm as the summer sun.--Zoey Colglazier
